Lady Choz hosts successful elite camp

The Inner-City All-American Camp, held on March 27 and 28, 2010, at the Gauchos gym, was a huge success by any measure.  The turnout was impressive with 100 high school girls from the Tri-State area and as far away as Delaware and Pennsylvania showing up for the by-invitation-only event.  Fifty of the girls were in grades 7th-9th, and the other 50 were uncommitted 10th-12th graders. More impressive, however, was the talent displayed by the campers, many of whom were highly scouted, nationally-ranked players.

Each day started out with station drills that not only tested the ball-handling, rebounding and shooting prowess of campers, but also their speed, strength, agility, and conditioning.  To test their stamina and intensity, the campers then played a total of four games, two in the afternoon session and two in the night session which was preceded by lunch and educational information concerning NCAA eligibility. All the campers played well beyond their years, and a few were honored with awards including: Hardest Worker in Camp (day 1) and Raquel Scott (day 2); Future Star Sahara Lopez (day 1) and Denajah Grant (day 2); and Outstanding Camper 7th Grade Martine Fortune, 8th grade Ashli Jeune, 9th grade Aliyah Cooley, 10th grade Sofia Roman, 11th grade Alyesha Lovett, and 12th Grade Tara Fearon. Also given out were the following special awards: Best Defense Camper Isis Young (day 1) and Starr Bredlove (day 2); Miss Offense Zaire Oneal (day 1) and Betnijah Laney (day 2); and Miss Everything Shynice Johnson (day 1) and Kahleah Copper (day 2).

The entire Lady Choz coaching staff, headed by Girls Program Director Earl Elliotte, wish to thank all campers and their parents for their enthusiastic participation and support.  They also would like to thank all scouting and media services that covered the event.

ACL Injuries in Women

Each year, more and more women discover the rewards of sports participation. Unfortunately, an increased number of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries has accom-panied the increased participation. ACL injuries in female athletes are an epidemic problem facing women, coaches, and the sports medicine community. The injuries generally occur without contact from another person and most often occur while the athlete is participating in basketball, gymnastics, or soccer. Female athletes have four to 10 times more ACL injuries than male athletes have. The reasons for the different rates of injury in men and women are not clear, but some theories include differences in anatomy, knee alignment, ligament laxity, muscle strength, and conditioning.

Anatomic differences In the knee joint, an intercondylar notch (compartment) lies between the two rounded ends of the thigh bone (femoral condyles) (Fig. 1). The ACL moves within this notch, connecting the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) and providing stability to the knee. It prevents the tibia from moving too far forward and from rotating too far inward under the femur (see Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries). Women have a narrower notch than men have; therefore, the space for ACL movement is more limited in women than in men. Within this restricted space, the femoral condyles can more easily pinch the ACL as the knee bends and straightens out, especially during twisting and hyperextension movements (Fig. 2). Pinching of the ACL in the joint can lead to its rupture (or tear).
